Judy Reinen's colourful, zany images of cats and dogs are recognised around the world these days, achieving acclaim and international awards. This year Judy is to be featured on nationwide TV in the USA. In 1999 her range of Hallmark greeting cards was recognised with a prestigious "Henry" award by the UK greeting card industry organisation and Judy was named "Pet Photographer of the Millennium" by popular Australian magazine, Pets and Vets. Achieving a photographic career studded with highlights on the international stage comes almost as a surprise to Judy, whose ambition growing up in Auckland, New Zealand was to become a vet. However, it is not as surprising when you know that she is the daughter of a scenic photographer! Judy has photography in her blood. She had a camera in her hands at a very early age and learned the concept of taking beautiful photographic images that could be applied to different products from her father. The skills developed have proved an inspiration for Judy's own work as her images now appear on products as diverse as stationary and calendars to bed linen through international licensing arrangements. Judy's current emphasis on humorous cat and dog photographs has slowly evolved from her first photographic challenge as an equestrian photographer. From small beginnings taking pictures of her sister at show jumping events, Judy spent six years mastering this demanding art form which requires split second timing, speed and organisation. "I had horses of my own and so I tried to take the kind of photos I would have loved of them", says Judy. Her philosophy and vision, combined with a passion for capturing precious moments on film led to the beginning of Creative Shotz Photography. At first the main emphasis was on weddings and portraits. International recognition was not long in coming with several awards in important International competitions, and an impressive list of professional qualifications to her name in New Zealand. Her growing reputation for creating something quite extraordinary in her images ensured she was booked for weddings up to two years in advance. Portraits by Judy Reinen are eagerly sought after, but there is not as much time to fit them in these days, and Judy has had to stop taking weddings due to the time commitments involved. As a client recently commented "the pictures Judy took of my family have transformed our house into a home". Over the last few years Judy has looked for new challenges in her professional career. By combining her love of animals, clear sense of style and bold use of colour Judy's focus has been on the cat and dog images she is now best known for. Editor of the Australian-based magazine Pets & Vets, Clair Honeywill, says of Judy's photos: "We've had such a great response. People love Judy's use of colour and sense of humour, which has helped to increase our sales". Producer of "Pets - Part of the Family", Lauren Saraisky was so impressed with Judy's images that she sent a film crew to New Zealand to photograph Judy at work. 300 TV stations across the PBS network in the United States will carry the items from July 2000. Always sensitive and empathetic, Judy is renowned for putting her subjects at ease; whether people or pets. She believes everyone should have fun on a shoot as it always reflects in the finished photographs. As a testimony to the success of Judy's method, she has won many international and national awards for her work. Winning a 'Henry' award in the fiercely contested Best Photographic Range category at the 1999 UK Greeting Cards Industry awards was recognition of the quality and universal appeal of her cat and dog images. Judy's captivating images of cats and dogs is available on an ever-increasing range of products around the world. Email: licensing@judyreinen.com © Copyright 2003-7 Judy Reinen. All rights reserved.
